Slicing and Dicing: TDP-43 Teams Up With Nucleases to Make MicroRNAs
February 16, 2012
TDP-43 shepherds select microRNAs through their maturation process from nuclear transcripts to grown-up regulatory fragments set loose in the cytoplasm...

GPS for Motor Neurons' Axons Identified
February 10, 2012
Researchers find that only a handful of genes are critical for decision-making at the leading edge of a developing motor neuron's axon as it navigates the complex environment to find its synaptic partner. These fundamental insights lay the groundwork for regenerative medicine approaches that seek to restore motor neuron-muscle connections lost in ALS.

SMN1 Gene Duplications are Associated with Sporadic ALS
February 8, 2012
Genetic studies reveal that the risk of developing sporadic ALS appears to be increased by duplications in a gene associated with the motor neuron disease spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). While deficiency in SMN1 protein, either through gene deletion or mutation, gives rise to SMA, it appears that excess SMN1 proteins may contribute to ALS by an unknown mechanism. Alternatively, researchers suggest that other genes affected by the duplication event may also confer risk independent of SMN1.

Tau Joins APP in the Ironworks
February 3, 2012
Could the answer to tau’s involvement in so many neurodegenerative conditions lie in its failure to perform a newly discovered role: promoting iron export?...

Mapping the Epigenome of ALS
February 1, 2012
There are many genetic mutations associated with ALS. More recently, changes in chemical modifications of the genome have been emerging as an important contributor to ALS. Still questions remain as to the extent that epigenetic modifications and consequent changes in gene expression lead to disease and how this knowledge will eventually lead to a treatment.
