Packard Center’s 10th ALS Scientific Symposium

Packard Center scientists and collaborators convened in Baltimore to present their latest ALS research efforts at the center's annual symposium. Among the highlights were discussions about newly identified ALS genes and mouse models, new applications for stem cells, and novel therapeutics.


Geneva: Biomarker News Morsels Amid Immunotherapy Review

Alzforum presents a report from the 11th International Geneva/Springfield Symposium on Advances in Alzheimer Therapy. In a very interesting session on immunotherapies, they reported that Neurimmune Therapeutics AG, a start-up biotech company located at the University of Zurich, presented data on naturally occurring protective antibodies. In preclinical experiments, some of these antibodies delayed disease onset in the SOD1-transgenic model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

This meeting of the minds brought together an international group of scientists from a wide variety of fields to discuss "New Approaches to Neurodegenerative Diseases." Society for Neuroscience 2009 Annual Meeting Report Part 4

The ALS Forum previously presented several ALS relevant stories that emerged at the meeting including a story focusing on drugs that cross the blood brain barrier, one on commonalities with Alzheimers' and Parkinson's, and a story covering defects in axonal transport. Here we expand our coverage of two other themes relevant to the ALS community: 1) the therapeutic potential of histone deacetylase (HDAC) regulation in ALS, and 2) newly generated TDP-43 animal models of disease.
